Visual basic for excel reddit4/14/2023 its up to you to figure out how that will work best.ĩ0% of the work I've done, over the last 8 years, has been developing spreadsheets, from simple report templates (that take all of 10 minutes to develop), to complex database/analysis tools (2+ years). You can use them independently, or you can interleave how they work. Think of VBA as being the automation of "physical" actions to manipulate data, within Excel, where as formulas/functions are the "mental" processing of data, based on what the information is. It is a pain to get into, but once you start playing with it, it can be surprisingly easy to work with, and the results can be absolutely mind-blowing (especially for those not in the know). On the plus side, you can use it to automate long and complex manual processing of data, or to generate information that you can't via a function/formula, and since it is a plain-english language, it is relatively intuitive, once you figure it out, at least for basic stuff.īut on the flip side, it can be difficult to work with, and some IT departments won't let it be used on their networks, and you do need to have the right mind-set and understanding to be able to work with it, especially, when you start pushing paste simple with/if/copy/paste coding. What do you do for a living, and what might you try to use Excel/VBA for, in your job?
